Through the process of creating our logo design, we needed to create something that is fresh and new to the pop music culture scene. Our logo needed to appeal to teenage girls, for which is our target audience, but it also needs to represent the true essence of Pop music. The name which was created is 'MME Records' purely for the fact that this is the initial of each our names in the our group. The name overall creates a feeling of being very catchy and being easy to remember. The name is original in terms of their being no other music company with this name. As a group we took the task upon ourselves to each individually create our own logo and once finished analyse the strengths and weaknesses of each to make a decision on our final logo of choice. When making the final decision we were required to consider many elements and aspects including our target audience as well as the type and genre of music that our label would release, from the fact that this would be our way of being recognised, meaning that it has be appropriate and universal. Our target audience is teenage girls ranging from 14-20 years of age. Meaning what we wanted to create needed to be eye-catching but also fit this age bracket.
Logo Design 1:
The logo which was created portrays a very simplistic, but elegance feeling logo. The monochromatic effect allows a professional feel to be present in the logo. The fact that this logo is monochromatic lloks at the trends in other logo which often remain very plain and simple to target a wide audience and variety of people.Often just revealing the name of a just to inform the audience of there name. However, the use of a record imagery in the logo adds a slightly outdated look, as many music items are either streamed online or listened through IPOD and phones. However, more recently the rise of records has became to come back into fashion with sale matching this, therefore creating a link between that factor. Although, the record could indicate a historical link to music, demonstrating the true roots of music and the real means of how music would often be heard. The use of two different fonts exposed in the logo, show elegance through the stylised writing and also a big, dominate industry in terms of having the more bold and defined typography. The positioning of all of the elements create a well-rounded unit that looks ascetically pleasing. The strength in this logo is defiantly the font as it really makes a statement. Overall, this logo is great but is far to bland for a teenage girl audience, therefore as a unit this logo will not be used. The comments made from our target audience suggested that this logo was very bland and lacked attention because of the lack of colour.
Logo Design 2:
For the next creation, more colour has been incorporated, with pinks and reds, a much more girly colour and stereotype for teenage girls. This could is also much more eye-catching. The logo itself actually has elements of the design for The Rolling Stones, who were a very successful band, who are very much known for tongue and cheek qualities. The use of a mouth and tongue, create a slight innuendo for sex, therefore appealing to the 18-20 year ages who fall into our age bracket. The use of mouth has been set in a pop art style using the effects through photoshop, creating a link between Pop art and Pop music. The use of adding headphones demonstrating a underlying musical quality, but shows a fresh feel in terms that it may link to a DJ and nightclub, again linking to the 18-20 age that falls in our bracket. it however does remain to link to a younger audience through the pinks and reds, colours related to a younger girls. An slight luminous effect to the headphones also accompanies the styling of the lips in the logo. The fact that the headphones are slightly off centre, doesn't detract the attention away from the main element, being the lips. The headphones being a more traditional style of headphone links more to the Pop era of the 1950's and 60's rather than the modern era of today. However, the font is also very bold, which is feel over powers the bold effects, therefore a much softer and elegant typography would contrast much better against the boldness in the lips and in the headphones.
Logo Design 3:
The third design created represents the pop art feel also, with the use of headphones showing a clear link between the second choice. The use of colours are less dark with blues to bring out the burgundy in the headphones. The use of male however instantly appeals to a female audience, automatically paying attention to this factor. However, the fact that the figure is Zac Efron creates a appeal to those who recognise him from the likes of High School Musical, era that this age bracket can link and relate to. Although, the headphones only show the true reason behind the figure, other than that there isn't really anything that really relates to the music genre and idea of music. The use of the font displaying a drawn effect adds an element of graphics and a mixed media piece. The use of typography being black, allows a professional feel in the font. It also relates to the other fonts available on the music market, being many black in colour. This logo is far too mature for our target audience and in effect has nothing to do with the music industry. When gaining feedback for this, an older and adult audience felt more appeal than a younger audience. Therefore, this will not be used as our logo.
Final Outcome:
The final decision of what our logo design will be is the second logo design. However, we changed aspects of the design a little with the use of the fonts from the first design , as we felt it added an element of elegance and fits the ideal for our target audience. The fact it links in terms of Pop music and the Pop art era shows clever play on Pop in all aspects. This logo very much stands out and really will create a statement on the page. It will also make us different and stand out compared to other music companies on the market in the music industry.Although, this logo also appeals to each age within a our target audience age bracket. The use of bright colour reflect the essence of Pop and reflecting the colours worn often by Pop artists in Music videos. The use of having two different styles of fonts creates something that is soft and elegant but yet still heavily linked to the idea of Pop.
In order to grasp a better breath and understanding of what makes a successful logo, I first began to look at what existing logos are available on the market in music. Ranging from small independent labels to much broader and vast labels. Through this I will be able to gain inspiration, in order to pursue the right outcome for a logo design for our music company. Its important when making choices on what shall be used to create the logo, you should consider a variety of factors including your target audience, your artist/group and who you are portraying and what will fit in terms of genre that is being produced through the label. For example, our target audience are female who aged between 14-20 years of age. The genre that we are creating our label for is Pop music, meaning something inspired or related to Pop would create the perfect fit and context for the genre. However, the fact that they are stereotypical teenage girls, refers to fact that they are still girly and feminine, suggesting an element of elegance, class and femininity is key to create a balance in the genre and what our target audience what in a design.
Below I have looked carefully and specifically at Pop dominate record labels, in order to use as inspiration on what elements could be used and what elements are used in Pop style logos. This will also allow use to appeal to the stereotypes of target audience and what fits comfortably with the genre of our artist.
The majority of the font types (Typography) and imagery which assist the lettering is very simplistic with defined lines to create a bold statement in the design. The use of bold, straight lines represents the conglomerates in the companies, being large and powerful, meaning that the logo must match the same quality as the label themselves. Further, most of the design are bland with little colour, mainly using a monochrome effect or a Treo of colours in the design. In my research, I found that many of the labels are owned by men, or are directed by men, implying the designs match the stereotypical role of a male, being strong and defined in masculinity . The imagery is also very little, but the imagery available is items related to music such as head phones, sound volume controls and or even items that relate to the nature of the labels name. For example, Island records has used a palm tree to suggest a island like setting to relate to the name. A similar quality throughout is the use of two different font types or one font if the logo has only one name, this would allow us to create a logo which is Pop in style, but also elegant and feminine through curved typography. The bold typography is often in a large font size, with the smaller in a medium to small font type. Overall, from this I want to create something which is pop related, in terms of Pop art, incorporating more imagery into our logo compared to the logos available. I also want a font that is bold but fits with the Pop art design and idea.
The name of our music company is MME Records, which is a combination of the beginning letter of each of our names. Adding a personal ownership to the company, but also making the unique as it based upon our names.
Fonts-
This typography at hand is very bold and black, with a white textured grain integrated through each letter, giving texture to the font. The curved edges soften the feeling of the lettering, achieving a slightly less conglomerate effect compared to something more constructed; firm/ sharp to the point. The curving displays a fun, youthful feel, the atmosphere related to the Pop genre that we are trying to create. The black/ white is very monochrome, giving a traditional feel to a modern style font. The white rippling through the black, addresses a thunder and lighting effect, like the good the bad, light and dark. The M's in this text dominate the font overall, towering above the rest of the font, making a statement, emphasizing the beginning of the name and drawing the eye instantly to the start of the text. The overall effect, is bland but the strokes of white, sparking movement and energy, perceived in the youth, a rush of Adrenalin. Nevertheless, the fact that it has little music relation, feels that this lettering is not correct for the effect we are trying to grasp.
The use of the musical instruments in a mixture of very classical instruments and a microphone, known heavily to the singing profession. Incorporating, historical and modern twists of the music world. However, they do replace the lettering, meaning it's impossible to determine what the name of the company is expressed, a big downfall to the typography. The remaining text, is very strong, with the use of straight and curved edges, a mixture of old and new. The fact that the typography is disconnected, adds a free falling feel, and disconnects from the audience. I feel that this lettering is very stamp like, formal and doesn't appear the fun factor in a head on, direct way. I feel that the image replacing the R is very messy, with little relation to music in any type of way, it feels very random and reminds me of a finger print, adding a criminal element related to R'n'B rather than pop which are young and innocent. This would be used for a classical music, but the relation to various music demonstrates that a more integrated and cross-converging music genre.
The text itself constructs a typewriter feeling, with elements of the ink being picked up and other parts leaving little ink on the page. This reminds of a classical music writing vibe, with the notes being hand written, showing the imperfection created from the various natural aspects; giving a very traditional feel compared the genre of Pop which is very modern and current to the trends of the music market. Further, the use of the line fading among and between the words, breaks the lettering up, separating them, as if they are not related when in fact they are. The lack of colour and imagination can be seen in this font, with no wow factor which would be relevant in my Pop genre. I literally need something with Pop's and really draws the eye to the logo. I feel this has a very industrial, metal and heritage feel, which is great to show the heritage of an element, like music. Furthermore, this genre is very recent and modern, therefore the heritage isn't what we want to show, but instead what Pop offers to society, and world of music. This font falls short to appeal in a way that shows Pop and new music that our company will bring.
Imagery-
When researching Pop art imagery much of the images shown was lips and tongues or headphones. The use of headphones would link to the stereotype of headphones used in many of the well-known conglomerates companies, adding a link to Pop music, but also consumption of music. Other Pop art imagery also appeared but isn't very relevant to the Pop music genre. I want to create my logo with both lips and headphones, therefore a link through music in headphones, but the lips will add a innuendo to sex and a female quality through the use of female lips. Referring to the fact our target audience is female and our artist/group is also female. The use of sex relates more to the older spectrum of our target audience.
Final imagery choice:
From the imagery above, this image I feel would be most suitable in which I want to create. With the use of Photoshop, this imagery would allow me to create a more complex form of Pop art with the use of special effects and deepening the colour, this will add richness and intensify the meaning of the lips. The white highlights on the lips, make a much more bold, plump lip, something that teenagers of the modern are trying to achieve inspired from idols like The Kardashians. The black achieves the perfect contrast among the white and pink, helping to define the detail of the lips. Within Pop it's common to sexual related elements in subtle ways, as what the lips are suggesting to those who are of an older age to understand what the lips are referring to. This picture is perfect for the elements and feeling we want, bring life to Pop, as well as, a modern art twist on the idea.
This image is also a final choice that will assist the lips, bringing the relation to the Pop music genre, However, the headphones cross into the R'n'B music, as do our group who are known for Pop mainly, with R'n'B elements to their tracks. The headphones show a historical feeling with more in ear headphones a popular choice, but these headphones can mainly be used by DJ's. The use of the blues in the headphones, add a more masculine touch, as well as, being a unisex colour. Therefore, relating to a universal group rather than just our target audience, expanding further and beyond, gaining more attention and popularity to our music label. The headphones are detracted from the background, my plans for this is to remove the background and enhance the quality of the headphones through, adding digital edits.
Final font choice:
This font is my final choice, it's very relevant with the idea of brush strokes, linked to art and assisting the idea of the continuous Pop art and Pop music theme running throughout, with the lips and the headphones. This font is bold, but is still feminine, related to Pop who are mainly a female target audience. However, the band that we are addressing is female and targets other females to empower themselves. Soft edges create a fun, loose vibe, related to teenagers who are free and go with the flow. To conclude, this lettering creates the perfect tone and atmospheric feeling I want in the logo.
Pop music is a genre of music that is popular music. Pop music originated in form of the western world in the 1950's and 60's, extracted fro Rock and Roll. The term 'Pop music' is very diverse and interchangeable as it relates to music that is popular, no matter the genre of style of music. Pop music often borrows other styles and elements of music including the likes of Urban, Dance, Rock, Latin and even Country music. However, there are still firm elements that defines Pop music. These factors include short to medium length songs written in a basic format of a verse-chorus structure, along with the common use of a repeated chorus, melodic tunes and even hooks. Conventions-
The clothing in Pop music is portrayed to be very bright and bold, to really make a big statement in the video. However, some artists like Lady Gaga go above and beyond the ideal, wearing items that are original and strange compared to the clothing trends of Pop, such as her meat dress idea. The clothing is essential as it creates the whole image of the artist and the way that they want to appeal to the audience. The lighting in Pop videos artificial and bright with white backgrounds, heightening the contrast and making the artists easily visible, as well as, remaining the focus on the artist. The high levels of lighting is often balanced out with small levels of low-key lighting or shadow to create a even contrast and balance between light and dark. The lighting can also sometimes be dim, depending on the lyrics of the song. In Pop, its very common for the video to always remain sole focus on the artist. The style of the videos are usually very upbeat and fun, often lacking relation to the lyrics. The use of make up is mainly in females, who wear extravagant make up, however male artists wear no make-up in Pop. The camera shots in pop music doesn't have any specifics but the video often uses lots of different shots, that last a few seconds at one time. The props that can be used depends, but mainly drugs or alcohol, sometimes cars often cruising in the video. Even instruments can be included. The overall image is usually fun and full of colour, really relating to Pop.
One Direction-
One Direction is an English-Irish pop band who formed in London. the band began with 5 members, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louie Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. However, Zayn Left the band on the 25th of March 2015. The group can to fame on the talent contest show, The X Factor, who put the group together when the all auditioned solo, but instead Simon Cowell thought they would be better as a band. The band finished third in the show. They are in fact signed to Simon Cowell's label, Syco Records. They rose to international fame on social media, the band has produced 4 albums, ' Up All Night' 2011, 'Take Me Home' 2012,' Midnight Memories' 2013 and 'Four' 2014. There 5th studio album. The bands Where We Are tour, was in support of Midnight Memories and Four, it was the highest grossing concert tour in 2014, generating $282 million dollars. The band at this moment in time is currently on a pause as of January this year, they are expected to have a 18 month rest in order to gain some rest and relaxation.
One Direction are a pop band who are very popular with a female audience, they are very big around the world. As a band, they very much follow the conventions of pop music, in all aspects through there use of clothing, style and image. The image that they portray is very casual, having them wearing jeans and t-shirts, something that a audience can replicate. The fact that the band as a whole are a male band also adheres to the stereotypes, as many of the pop bands are male dominant, including the likes of That take and West life. They are all male dominant and are have all been hugely successful in the Pop industry. One Direction since they have rose to fame have become the artists that have taken the world by storm. With their tracks being something that the audience can sing with, the tracks being mainly about girls means that there girl fan base can relate to the songs that they are producing, feeling a personal connection between them and the band. In conclusion, as a band they very much adhere to the stereotypes of modern music and the stereotypes of being a band. The fact that they don't flash there fame creates a sense of reality between for the audience and for the artists themselves.
Culture Club-
Culture Club are an English band that formed in 1981. The band consists of four members Boy George, Roy Hay, Mikey Craig, and Jon Moss. There second album, Colour By Numbers, sold more than 10 million copies world wide. It appeared on Rolling Stone's magazines list of the 100 Best Albums in the 1980's. The band has several big hits including, 'Do You Really Want To Hurt Me', 'The War Song', 'I Just Wanna Be Loved' and 'Karma Chameleon'. Boy George's style and fashion often caught the attention of the fans and the media, with his very quirky style, with big make-up and clothes to match. The band themselves is considered one of the most representative and influential groups of the 1980's. As a band, they have sold more than 50 million records. Ten of their singles reached the US top 40. Cultures Club music combines British new wave and American soul with Jamaican reggae, they were very unique and broke the ideal of modern music. In the UK, they gained 12 Top 40 hit singles between 1982-1999. 'Karma Chameleon' was the biggest selling single in 1983, and topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1984.Overall, they are one of a kind band, who pushed the boundaries of music, they still remain to well-known to this day.
The culture club were very unique for there time and still remain to be unique, they pushed the boundaries of music. The fact that the front man, Boy George wore make up, gave him a very feminine quality and a persona beyond who he is. Creating an image that is something only a female artist would pursue, by him wearing make-up he is seen as an idol for those who feel they don't have a place in society, they feel like they can relate to him. The use of costume also matched his extravagant make-up, the use of colour really brings him to life. The use of costume and make up working in harmony as one, creates this feminine persona that would not have really be seen before boy George, in a world for the LGBT community. The band were very much known for having the location and setting name in which they filmed there music videos at, during the opening sequence of the video, giving an element of reality through filming at locations that people are aware of. The video itself is set in the 1870's, a time of Victorians, with big dresses and hats. The fact that he is wearing modern clothes in this era, making him stand out and become the centre of attention. The fact that he is wearing clothes in the future and they are dressed in the past, shows the heritage of fashions throughout the eras. Before the time of colour, he is showing them the future and what to expect in the future. The use of the man in the video stealing from the rich, implies an feeling of criminal activity and the fact that things may seem perfect on the surface, but underneath there is always a element of sinful crimes. The idea of gambling and betting, also assists the fact of wealth, with the name of the song also adds to this factor, of a chameleon, an lizard that can change his image, his skin to fit into the crowds. However, the idea of Karma, showing that if you perform a crime karma will catch up with you, paying you back for your sin.Showing, the perfect image from afar but with deeper inspection, theft can be seen.
Adele-
Adele is an English singer and songwriter. Graduating from the Brits School of performing arts and technology in 2006, Adele gained a record deal with XL Recordings, this was once a friend had posted a video of Adele singing her demo on MySpace the same year. A year later, she received a Brit award 'Critics choice' award, she also won BBC Sound of 2008. Her debut album, 19 was released in 2008 with a great amount of success. The album gained seven platinum titles in the UK and a double platinum in the US. In 2009, Adele received awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. In 2011, Adele released her second studio album 21. This single earned the singer numerous awards in 2012, including 6 Grammy Awards. The album itself sold 31 million copies and in the US held top position longer than any other album since 1985. 21 is the longest running number one album by a female artist in the history of the UK and US top charts. In 2012, Skyfall was released for the James Bond film, the song won an academy award, A Grammy Award, and a Golden Globe award for Best Original Song. After taking a three year break after having her son, Adele released her third studio album, 25 in 2015. The album became the years best selling album, breaking first week sale records in both the UK and America. The lead single 'Hello' became the first song in the US to sell over one million digital copies within a week of release. Adele is one of the best-selling recording artists in the world, with sales of more than 100 million records.
Adele is very well know for singing, and her vocal performance means no videos are really needed, but the video in which she produces are very emotional, in terms of being mainly performance videos. The use of light in the video is predominantly a spotlight on the artist, contrasting against the background which is black. This is also a convention of a Pop video, using light to focus on the artist, as well as, the black being the backdrop for the artist. The use of costume in the video is also very subtle, with Adele wearing a single floral print dress. Assisted, with minimal make-up and elegant hair, creating a whole image of class. The idea of having a reflection, mirroring her on the glass. The use of digital effects in the video creates almost ghost images of Adele, freeing a spirit linking to the lyrics of leaving the past behind her. Therefore, freeing apart of her in order to move on with her life. The use of camera angles in the video has been used through a close-up of her face, focusing on the emotion in her face. The fact that she is fed up of men treating her as if she is something that they can throw away. The use of zooming in and out of the artist, creates an illusion of movement in the video even though she isn't moving herself. When looking closer, its clear to see that the background of the black screen, flickers in motions of boxes, enhancing the movement. The overlaps in the video, show a slight tint of green, adding more colour to the whole image. Overall, the video very much subverts the stereotypes of Pop, with minimal use of bold colour, however, the fact that she is singing in a performance video is common for the Pop genre. The fact that she is wearing subtle make-up and clothing also assists the idea of subversion. Meghan Trainor-
Meghan is a American singer, songwriter and record producer. Trainor wrote, recorded, produced three independently released albums between the ages of 15 to 17. In 2011, she signed a publishing deal with Big Yellow Dog Music, pursuing a career in song writing. After making the switch in 2014 to Epic Records, Meghan rose to fame with the release of her major debut studio album, Title 2015. The Album reached number one on the US Billboard 200. The album went on to sell over one million copies. The album produced three 10 top singles: 'All About That Bass', 'Lips Are Moving' and 'Like I'm Gonna Lose You'. Her second major release, Thank You 2016, with 'No' being a top three hit on Billboard Hot 100. Meghan as an artist influenced by the 1950's and 60's era in music, Meghan has a very unique retro style to her. Common themes in her lyrics include subjects on womanhood, empowerment and body image of women. Meghan has gained several awards and nominations which include, A Grammy Award, Music Business Association breakthrough artist of the year, as well as two Billboard Music Awards.
Meghan is very much a artist that is very much Pop related, she shows the stereotypes of Pop, through the use of colour. The fact that she is very colour related, the use of blues create a cool vibe. The use of make-up in the video is also very much big and bold, with the artist also having a variety of different costumes shows her wealth, being able to afford various items of clothing. The blue theme remains throughout even in the clothing with the artist having a blue outfit in the sequence. The length of the outfit is also very revealing, in terms of the dress being very short on the artist. The song itself shows the use of showing off her fame and wealth, displaying the fact that she is taking about the gold she has, and the fact that she is able to afford big items. This gives the impression to the audience that the artist is very fame obsessed. Therefore, not feeling attached to her audience and the audience feeling as if she is above them. Overall, she can be seen as someone who uses her wealth to make herself more popular. The use of pop adheres to the idea of pop with the blues, being eye-catching and standing out from the rest of the image. To conclude, she can be seen as using her fame to believe that people must respect her due to her fame.
10 year prediction-
I believe that in 10 years, Pop music will continue to expand, exploring all elements and natures of society, tackling issues that are present in today's society. I feel that Pop will continue to above and beyond what is expected, But i feel that a sexual nature will only expand, into explicit natures. In conclusion, Pop will i hope keep its colour and vibrant nature to really remain its true essence of Pop music.
Folk music includes both traditional music and 20th century music which has evolved and developed into the folk music which can be recognized today. The term 'folk' came about in the 19th century but the style of music is in fact hundreds of years old. An often association is traditional music from unknown artists. Starting in the mid-20th century folk music was given a new formula, which is often known as contemporary folk music or revival folk music, in order to portray a difference between earlier forms. This revelation of folk music includes various genres and fusions of other music, such as folk rock, folk metal and electric folk. Although, revival folk music is generally different and distinct from traditional folk music, they still have a variety of similar traits which include the same name and same performers and performance locations as traditional folk music. The traditional idea of folk expanded from folklore, which was created by William Thoms in 1846 and referred directly to the idea of ' suspicious and customs applied to those of an uncultured class'. Within folk music the song itself which is often a short tune with an instrumental piece, with repetitive sequences, that is played a frequent number of times. Binary forms are also essential of AABB and is extremely common in folk music. On occasions, in some folk music tunes are strung together in medleys or sets.
The conventions and codes often referred to the use of instruments which are often a variety and vast range of instruments, including the items such as acoustic guitars, Banjos, violins, pianos and even electric guitars depending on the cross-convergence of genres; like Folk rock, which an electric guitar would be more associated to. The video itself however displays the singer or the whole band, often in close up shots or long shots. The close up shots and the use of the artist distinguish where exactly the music is being produced from, as well as, showing the sheer expression of the artist. Plus, the depth put into the song. Increasing the intensity of the song and the connection between the audience and the artist, bringing the audience closer to the artist and drawing upon personal experiences.Feeling a clear unity between the artist and the audience. The use of the long shots in the video however establishes and captures the scenery, grasping the setting, in order to understand the song or the feeling that the song produces. In folk music it is also easily to establish that it's traditional in all senses, ranging from the materials used in the clothing, the setting and the use of lighting. Folk music focuses heavily and solely on the natural environment, especially elements and items which are already and freely available in nature. This also consists of the location too, often being in open or abandoned settings, which can be secluded from society and neutral in every aspect, but primarily colour. The video itself also portrays a easily distinguishable narrative linking to the lyrics of the song, expanding the depth and emotion of the song, creating a greater linked chain between the audience and the artist. Therefore, making the audience able to relate to the artists situation of the song. The lighting in folk music videos is usually ambient or warm lighting, but depending on the cross-convergence into other genres the lighting can be artificial, creating intensity in the video and amplifying the essence of the lyrics. However, the video itself can also consist of vintage filters or drained colour to assist the organic, pure and wholesome approach of Folk music.
Bob Dylan-
Bob Dylan is an American Singer-songwriter, artist and Writer, he has been an influential music and culture icon for more than five decades. Many of Dylan's songs contained of a variety of subjects including politics, philosophy, social society and literacy ideas and aspects. Dylan as an artist has grasp and adapted many musical genres over the expatiation of his career. The instruments in which he uses is a keyboard, guitar and harmonica. He as an artist has toured from the 1980's with a host of key line-up artists, in what is considered to be a never ending tour. The traditional forms of folk music videos are not the modern idea associated with Folk videos, they often were only the live performances of the artist or the band, which would become their music video. This is due to the fact that Folk was something that people wanted to hear and can create a visual representation of a video on their own accord. During the time of Bob Dylan it was very unlikely that the audience had a means to actually view a fancy video, with televisions being a new idea on the scene and radio being the main source for hearing music, videos were not needed as people couldn't view the videos. In contrast, many artists at this time also didn't gain huge profits from their music as vinyls were the predominate source to hear music and the era of cassettes also begun, but were sold for low prices or at high price, that people couldn't actually afford. Therefore, less money was gained by the artist. Due to the idea that the artist didn't have huge expenses, they didn't in fact have the money to create luxurious and lavish video's for the public to view. It would create unnecessary costs for something that the artist can't in fact afford and something that the public couldn't view due to the high costs of the new technology, the television. On the first television there were only 3 channels and the real music surrounded program was Top of the Pops, incorporating live performances by the artist; meaning also no video was needed if live performances were visible to the audience. To conclude, music videos were not needed in this era due to the limit of technology, but as technology and artists progressed they needed to find new and inventive ways to remain the attention of the audience, as well as, amplify the image of the artist, Music videos became the means to achieve this.
Joni Mitchell-
Mitchell is a Canadian singer-songwriter and painter. Mitchell's work is highly respected by critics, including the likes of the rolling stones who called her 'one of the greatest songwriters ever'. Her lyrics are known best for their personal relation to feeling of romantic longing, confusion and joy. Drawing conclusions on personal experiences. Mitchell first begun singing in small nightclubs and busking on the streets. In 1965 she moved to the United States and begun touring, eventually settling in California with songs like 'Big Yellow Taxi' and 'Woodstock' which helped mould and create the well-known artist that she is. Later on in her career, Mitchell changed record labels and begun to move into the Jazz style of music, in which she released her best-selling LP, including radio hits like 'Help me' and 'Free man in Paris'. Throughout her career her genre category changed, she experimented with a variety of genres. These genres include Jazz, R'n'B, Rock and Roll and non-western beats. As time and age went on she began to also explore electronic music. However, throughout these music phases she remained to use her guitar which was a distinctive trait for her as the guitar was often over-tuned. In her career she has gained 9 Grammy Awards for various elements including Best Folk performance, Album of the year and Best album notes. Recently, however Mitchell has become less active in music due to a variety of health problems, including a brain aneurysm, leaving her needing rehabilitation in terms of walking, but she still remained to paint throughout the process. Overall, it's clear to conclude she is and will remain a true musical legend with her legacy to remain to live on.
Female icons in Folk music were very rare as many of them were solo male artists or male duets, even male folk bands were quite unique at this period of time. However, Mitchell became the key break in female Folk artists, at this period of time woman were still looked down upon as house wife's who are created to be in the kitchens, looking after their husband's and children, putting their dreams last. Meaning, woman were pushed aside in music and frowned upon. But, when women's rights came into place more women were less repressed from their dreams and had the rights to do as they please, meaning more female artists came forward in music. Women who dreamed of being a singer also put their dreams aside because they wanted a family, fearing they would not be able to juggle being a mother and also a female singer. The pay gap also played a huge role in music as women would earn much less than male singers, meaning their sole love for music would have to be enough instead of relying on music as an income, expressing that the female artist would need another job just to survive and less time spent on music, creating less success of the the female artist. At this period of time more sexualisation on women came into play, as female artists into the late 1960's and 70's were expected to follow the fashion trends of twiggy and other icons, with the likes of short skirt. Many women disagreed with this and refused, dropping their music career and dropping music altogether, or distributing their own music, which was less like to make success due to their limits of marketing as that's want was expected from the music company that the artist was signed too. As well as, once word got around that the artist dropped from the label, a automatic stigma came that the artist must not be very good, so people switched off from that artist. In conclusion, even though women's rights had progressed society was still slow in understanding that woman are equal to man and the pay gap put female artist's off music. Fashion and models also played a part as the image of the artist began to count due to rise in those purchasing television and being able to see the artist. Overall, females were penalized due the sex they were given in contraception.
Mumford and Sons- 'Mumford and Sons' are a band in which combined in 2007, in London. The band consists of 4 members all having their own musical qualities, factors and contributions to the band, in forms of having many skills. The members; Marcus Mumford who is the main singer of the band, he can also play instruments including acoustic and electric guitar alongside being able to play the drums. Ben Lovett however is key to band, being able to play the keyboard, piano and synthesizer. Winston Marshall in contrast plays the electric guitar and banjo and Ted Dwane being able to play the bass guitar and double bass. They also all contribute on the vocals, demonstrating a multi-talented band who display a true instinct for folk music. The genres of music in which they are categorized to are: folk rock, alternative rock and folk. In there music career so far they have produced and published 3 studio albums: Sigh No More (2009), Babel (2012) and Wilder Mind (2015). They have as a band also released two live albums which are; Live at Shepherds Bush Empire (2011) and The Road To Red Rocks (2012). Throughout the extent of their career they have also gained a number of music awards and nominations, With Sigh No More gaining the band a Brit Award for Best British Album in 2011 and Six Grammy Award nominations. The rise of the status of the band in the US appeared through a live performance on the 2011 Grammy Ceremony with Bob Dylan and The Avett Brothers. For their second studio album the band retrieved Eight Grammy nominations and the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Along with winning a Brit Award for Best British Group in 2013.
Within the band 'Mumford and Sons' they are very stereotypically Folk, in terms of the lighting in which is visible, as it has a haze to the overall construct of the video. Producing a saturated effect, increasing the idea of folk being a traditional means of music, enhancing the old-fashioned idea associated with folk. The lighting is also very much artificial, with the opening scene demonstrating two dominate light bulbs, which are evenly distributed across the screen, taking the eye of the audience across the whole screen, drawing their attention instantly. The two light bulbs keep the image simplistic, something very common with folk traditions. Often only focusing on the song and the artist, this way it remains within folk traditions of solely and specifically focusing on the quality of the music being heard. The intensity of the light assists to focus on the artists and the quality of the music that they are producing. The light in aspects of the video even casts shadows upon the artists, creating a contrast between light and dark, strengthening the depth in the video, as well as, the depth to the meaning of the song. This darkness produces silhouettes, forming shells of the artists and as if they have lost parts of themselves, showing through the lyrics that they have in fact inflicted pain on someone else but not recognizing the mistake until that person has left. Demonstrating a clear link between the lyrics of the song and the use of darkness to display the emptiness felt from the mistakes in which they have made. However, the use of acoustic instruments such as guitars, drums and banjos; with the instruments and lighting harmonizing, gently creating a vintage design and look within the band. Heavily and distinctly indicating that they are a folk related band. The use of costume within the video, uses very traditional fabrics indicating the use of natural materials and fabrics used incorporating the likes of tweed, woolen fabrics, cotton and leather. Portraying a very grounded, earthy and natural approach, commonly associated to those of folk genre. The fitting of the clothes on the artists are generally loose with dull colours due to the natural colour of the used materiel. The clothing is not skin tight clothing often associated with R'n'B or Pop music. In this video it portrays instrumental parts with sole focus on the instruments, demonstrating the power and force put into the playing of the instruments, showing their passion for music, as well as, making the band authentic to folk and the audience. The fact that the band are unshaven, adds to their image of folk and makes them seem in one with their body and the natural hair produced by their body. The representation of age in this video represents the band to be much before their time, as the clothing shows the fact that they are shown to much more older than they really are, to link to the traditional forms of folk music. The age can also be linked to sexuality as they are portrayed as very masculine with the beards and fall headed hair. However, one the members actually subverts the stereotypes with wearing a very floral suit jacket, giving him a feminine quality, creating a link to a female audience. The fact that they are manly with beards means they target males who want to be them and females who want to be with them. The use of the lead singer wearing an earring, adds an elegance to him, giving him a less harsh look and making him more approachable to the audience. The use of an earring also keeps them fresh and youth related by having shiny jewellery, as well as, portraying an element of glamour to a rough, imaged band, creating an contrast and balance between new and old.

Ben Howard-
Ben is an English Singer-songwriter, he actually self-released his Debut Games in the Dark (2008) with two more EPs; These Waters ( 2009) and Old Pine (2010). Ben is now signed to Island and Communion. However, his major debut studio album came in 2011, Everyday Kingdom followed by Ben Howard live (2011) and The Burgh Island (2012). In 2013, Ben gained as Brit Award for Best British Male Solo artist. He also performed at Glastonbury in 2013. He released his second studio album, I Forget Where We Were, in October 2014. As a Child, he was raised by musical parents who exposed him to early folk artists for the 1960's to 1970's including John Martyn, Van Morrison, Simon and Garfunkel and Joni Mitchell. Which were to become his strong influences in the Folk music. Howard begun to write songs at the age of Eleven. He is also a man very talented with the guitar, but as kid he also played other instruments. After attending King Edward VI community collage and Torquay Boys' Grammer school he went on to study journalism at the University Collage Falmouth. However, six month before he was due to complete his course he decided he preferred music and pursued it as a career. Furthermore, his reputation grew Around Devon and Cornwall, spreading across the UK. After a month, of sold-out tour dates in the Europe and the UK, he was eventually offered a contract to Island records. The genres of music that Ben is related heavily to is Folk and Folk rock music.
Ben pushes the boundaries of modern Folk music, using extreme prolonged shots in his music videos which show simplicity of the characters and the elegance of the lyrics take centre stage in the whole creation. His music videos show and demonstrate a different side to Folk music, rather than focusing on him as a singer, in the music video he has created a narrative. A narrative of two people spending time at the beach, but it's slightly has a more indie vibe through the idea that the characters are portrayed as emotionless. The use of having a female and male in the video shows equality which differs from the fact of Folk music in the era of Joni Mitchell, showing a change in women and there purpose in Folk music, stepping up from the 1960's folk ideology. The shots of this video also differ from the 'Mumford and Sons', as many of the shots in this video are long and display a lengthy period, showing the variety in which Folk video's can produce. This video also subverts the conventions in having long timed shots, but these long timed shots also create cross-convergence into another genre of indie. To conclude, Ben is another example of modern Folk which explores the modern feel of Folk rather than the traditions of Folk music, adventuring into the modern age of music.
10 Year Prediction-
In 10 years, I feel that female's will rise onto the folk scene, as well as, male Folk bands and Folk will increase in reputation, becoming a genre that is more and more of what society will listen too, I feel that folk is a innocent genre in remaining child friendly through the lack of sexualized images portrayed. But, I feel that folk has become much more equal in men and woman, as equality has continued to grow into the fact that there is less of a pay gap, even though it still remains. People are learning to follow their true passions, rather than being tied down with marriage and children and even being able to balance a life between the both. Overall, I feel Folk will remain with it's true roots of tradition, and keeping the tradition of Folk alive. I feel though that there will be a sub-convergence genre that falls under the influence such as R'n'B or Rap which will show a sexual nature, in the innocence genre of folk.
R'n'B or rhythm and blues, is a genre of music which is linked heavily to urban african-american style music. Rhythm and blues first emerged in the 1940's in american states including the likes of Chicago, Detroit, New York and Los Angeles, however rhythm and blues is more typical for the 1950's through to the 1970's. The term R'n'B became a reference to the idea of development from rock and roll, but also combining the use of electric guitars, as well as gospel and soul music. Portraying a contribution of a variety of music genres, in order to form and merge R'n'B. Rhythm and blues often is used as a means of expressing the notion, of freedom and joy, but often the use of experiences is produced through the use of pain. Rhythm and blues include personal experiences to create something that not just the artist links with, but also relative to the audience. The type of instruments found within this R'n'B mainly includes a piano, one or two guitars, bass drums and even a saxophone in more jazz related areas. Throughout the years, R'n'B has changed and developed into different forms; by the 1980's yet again R'n'B had changed into a more modern approach and being classified as 'contemporary R'n'B" which combines elements of soul, funk, hip hop and dance. In the 20th century, many R'n'B artists rose to fame including the likes of Stevie Wonder, R. Kelly, Mariah Carey and even Whitney Houston. However, newer artists have emerged on the R'n'B scene including the links for the likes of Beyonce, Usher, Mary J Blige and Ne-Yo. Conventions Men-
In R'n'B, it is very common for the males who are present in the videos to have very little clothing, in terms of the fact that they are often shirtless, as they are trying to apply heavily to their target audience of teenage girls. The idea of clothing is also reflected in the style in which they wear their jeans, in which often reveals their pants, this assists the use of being topless. The jeans often have a statement belt, which is branded with a designer label, demonstrating advertisement in the video for that brand. Usually in the video, a few focused shots are used to solely focus of the product in which is being advertised. Lots of R'n'B artists often display tattoos on their bodies, mainly on the arms, chest and neck. This adds to their masculinity as they can withhold the pain of tattoos, as well as, the fact that they have multiple tattoos rather than one on show. Often the tattoos portray a personal meaning to the artist, showing a sensitive quality. The use of jewellery on males is actually quite subtle, as they often only wear one items at one time, often being a watch, earring or chain. This is much less than what would be seen on a hip hop artist who have extents amounts of jewellery to extenuate their wealth gained through being a music artist.
Woman-
Woman in R'n'B often are revealed in very little clothing, portraying their stomachs or chests. Appealing and attracting a male audience, who are suppose to see the female artists as objects of desire or sex. The hair and make-up is always very dramatic and not practical. The hair is often styled in a very eye-catching way that is often impossible to replicate. The make-up is very bold and dramatic, especially the use of eye shadow being dark and smokey, with bold eyelashes and even uses of gold to make the eyes of the artist alluring. Showing power and strength of an independent woman, they sometimes also have red lipstick, making a bold statement. The shoes that female R'n'B wear are often very high heels to elongate the length of their legs, however some do on occasions were designer trainers to perform choreographed dances.Although, some perform these dances in their heels, to prove how strong as women they are that they can in fact perform the dances in eccentric shoes. The use of jewellery is often very little, but the items they wear make a bold statement in terms of big hooped earrings, rings, chains and bracelets. This can sometimes make the artist look tacky or trashy, especially in the 90's, but as R'n'B has evolved, less items of jewellery are displayed on the artist, making them seem more professional and developing with the era of woman's rights.
Usher- Usher is an American singer, songwriter, dancer and actor. In August 1994, he self-released his debut album, Usher which included the songs, 'Can you get wit it' and 'Think of you'. However, he rose to fame in the late 1990's with the release of his second album 'My Way' 1997 which landed him with his first US billboard Hot 100 number hit 'Nice & Slow'. 'My Way' also earned Usher his first Grammy award nomination for his debut 'You Make Me Wanna..' which reached number one on the Rhythmic Top 40, Hot Dance Singles Sales, and US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts. His follow up album 8701 produced number ones including 'U Remind Me' and 'U Got It Bad' which won him his first Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 2002, along with ' U Don't Have To Call' earning him his second in 2003. In 2004, Usher released, Confessions which won him The Best-Selling Musical Artist of the 2000's. It sold 20 million copies across the world, gaining him his 4th Billboard Hot 100 Number one, with songs like, 'Yeah!', 'Burn' and 'My Boo'. This follow-up albums include 'Here I Stand' 2008 and Raymond vs Raymond 2010. His 7th Studio album, Looking 4 Myself 2012, debuted on the Billboard 200 chart at number one. To date, Usher's worldwide sales stand at over 43 million albums and 75 million records overall, allowing to achieve the fact that he is one of the best selling music artists. He has won Eight Grammy Awards. On September 2007, Usher was placed on the 29th Annual Georgia Music Hall Of Fame. In 2008, he started his own record label Raymond-Braun Media Group at joint idea with talent manager Scooter Braun. The most prodominat artist that they represented was Justin Bieber.
Within this song, it appears to be heavily sexualised throughout,in the sense that Usher has his chest and abs visible throughout the sequence. Indicating a link to the lyrical meaning of the song which is based upon the fact that he can't control his feelings for someone else, when he is in fact in a relationship with someone else. Having his chest exposed appeals to a female audience, appealing to them through a sexual nature. The video itself is very much based with him mainly singing and dancing in a variety of locations, the fact that he can dance gives him an extra advantage and talent, appealing further to a wider audience and more of a male audience who aspire to be like him. The video has a very underwater and sea life feel. A metaphor for the fact that he feels like that he is drowning in the confusion of who he likes and who he really wants in his life. Drowning under the pressure of what he wants emotionally and physically.Adding a sensitive feel to the artist. The image of the artist in the video can be portrayed through his clothing which is predominantly tracksuits, giving him a gangster and hooded youth feel. However, the clothing seems to swallow him, like a child in adults clothing, trying to be too mature for his age, This could also assist the idea of the fact that he feels drowned and the clothes drowning him adds to this idea. In the video he is also shown to be wearing a suit, adding an essence of class to him but also maturity though wearing a suit. The suit however is very risky in terms of the fact that the suit is white, standing out much more compared to a black suit. The fact that the suit is white can also add a summery feel, to keep cool. The colours through the whole of video mainly includes black, orange, purple and white. Black and white being a classic mix, the purple and orange also create the perfect contrast as they are complementary colours. Furthermore, the camera angles in the video are mainly wide angle shots or close-ups of the artists face. The wide angles are designed to capture the dancers and whole surrounding feel of the video. The close up shots however focus on the emotion in the face for what he is singing about, giving reality to what he is singing about, due to the fact that most R'n'B singers use experiences to sing from. Overall, in the video he is shown to be very sexualised but also drowning on the fact of what choice he should make, a choice that may change his life completely.
Over time it's clear to grasp that with age Usher has become more sophisticated, without sexualising himself but the fact he isn't also sexualising the female role in the video. This video shows a instant change in Usher compared to his younger years, the fact that he is more covered focuses on the song and his vocal performance. The song itself could be seen as very childish in terms of the fact that its about a crush, something sweet and childlike, rather than love which would be seen as more grown up and appeal to adults. As he has become older, from the video its clear to see that he has become a lot more innocent and mature, as if he is reliving his youth before he was famous or before he became a singer. The image that he has created for himself now represents a very neutral image, with facial hair making him seem older and mature in terms of being able to grow facial hair. The fact that the video is also monochrome adds a essence of class, with black and white being a classic image that works effectively for everyone. In this track he is actually the featuring artist, allowing the female artist to take control of the song, showing a change in R'n'B, with the female demonstrating a predominant lead. The fact that she is also wearing a head scarf, could show a religious idea, showing a change in the cultural idea of represented in R'n'B, her maybe being religious displays a chain of cultural change, a breakthrough in R'n'B compared the 90's style of R'n'B. From the videos that are present at hand it's clear to see that he has remained with performance videos, solely focusing on the quality of the song and his voice, but over time less dancing is used and even though, women are still in his video a significant change has occurred in the way they are represented, not as sexual objects but as artists themselves. Overall, with age Usher has grown to understand that the voice and song is what should matter, rather than the sexual image he is trying to create. As well as, the fact that with age he must mature into an adult, but also with the change in R'n'B he must change with the time period and trends of that time period. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis-
Macklemore is a american recording artist from Seattle, Washington. His Stage name originated in his childhood, as it was a name of his made-up superhero. Since 2000 his has independently released one mix tape, 3 EPS and 4 albums. His specifically known for his collaboration with Ryan Lewis who is his producer. Their song 'Thrift Shop' reached number one on US Billboards Hot 100 in 2013. The song soon after earned the title as the first song since 1994 to reach number without the support of a major record label. However, Macklemore does pay a percentage to Warner Bros records radio promotion department to push his singles. His second record 'Can't Hold Us' also peaked at number one of the Hot 100 Chart making Macklemore and Lewis the first duo in the chart's history to have their first two singles which have both reached the peak position of number one. In 2012, they relaesed their Album ' The Heist' which charted at number two on the US Billboard 200. The pair won 4 Grammy Awards at the 2014 ceremony, for Best New Artist, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance. Their second album was released in February 2016, 'This Unruly Mess I've Made'.
However, the music video 'same love' portrays a narrative story line, expressing the idea about gay rights and the equality of same sex relationships, actually the experience of a same sex marriage. linking to the idea of R'n'B through drawing upon experiences, creating something same sex relationships can relate to, as well as, exaggerating how a same sex relationship is just as important and normal its is to heterosexual relationships. This video as a whole is very unique within R'n'B, cross converting into pop. Which in fact many modern music genres display, it is often hard to define one genre and category in music. This video is very controversial and pushes the boundaries of modern music. This video was released around the time that the law came into place allowing same sex relationships to legally be wife and wife or husband and husband, rather that a civil partnership as it was formally known. This video massively targets a wide audience in the fact that it tackles an issue which is 'normalizing' into society and evolving into something that people understand and are actually beginning to accept, but also getting to grips with the idea that religion won't cure the attraction to the same sex. The video is used to try and express the fact that a gay relationship is normal and the same as a heterosexual relationship, in terms of settling down and getting married. Although, the stigma attached remains even in today's society by minority and those who perceive gay marriage in this way are ignorant, to the fact that love is love no matter what sex the couple are.
Many typical R'n'B tracks consist of males predominately wearing black and heavy jewellery displayed around there neck. Demonstrating the wealth that they have. Locations are often within the streets, in clubs, in a house party or bedroom, and the men are usually surrounded by sexualised woman in skimpy outfits. Linking massively to an old-fashioned, patriarchal society, indicating that R'n'B is very much behind in times of understanding equality between males and females. However, this video at hand very much distinctly subverts the stereotypes. The lyrics themselves express the idea that american is a very christian society, focusing on tradition and God only seeing man and woman as one. Within the lyrics she states 'not crying on sundays, she keeps me warm' repeated and used as chorus for the structure of the song. The fact that this video portrays very much a story line on love, suggests that no matter want genders the couple are love is love. The idea of showing birth to death, demonstrates no influence from people in order to be gay, being gay isn't a choice but something that naturally occurs. This is very much demonstrated in the video. The video feels very realistic and natural, just showing the true love between the couples. The video however is staged to show the discrimination that people face everyday in society. The video is very much a timeline looking at the past, present and future. The fact that he refers to his uncle, makes me believe that this is his uncle's story and life of being gay. The use of camera angles in the video vary with the use of close ups to focus on the love between the couple. More specifically, the use of wide angle shot at the point that they get married shows the pride from the close friends and family, but there love for there family member whether he is gay or not. The use of showing short video clips at the end of lesbian relationship, balances the idea that lesbians and gays deserve the same respect as straight couples. Overall, love is love and that's what the artist is trying to portray, pushing the boundaries of modern R'n'B.
Mariah Carey- Carey is an American singer, songwriter, record producer and actress. She became known in the 1990's after she released her first single ' vision of love' taken from her debut album. she produced 4 chart topping singles in the US in what would become a string of singles and albums for the successful singer who is the top selling artist for Colombia records. In 1998, she was awarded with the title of best selling recording artist of the 1990's at the World Music Awards and named the best selling female artist of the millennium in 2000. In 2002, she signed a multi-million dollar deal with Island Records. After an unsuccessful period she started to return to the top of the music charts, with The emancipation of Mimi. This album became the best selling album in the US and the second best selling worldwide in 2005. Throughout her long career, she has sold over 200 million records world wide, making her one of the best selling artists of all time. she is also the third best selling female artist in the US, having 63.5 million certified albums. With the release of 'Touch My Body' in 2008, she earned her 18th number one single in the US, more than any other singular artist. Aside from these achievements, she also has won 5 Grammy Awards, 19 World Music Awards, 11 US Music Awards, and 14 Billboard Music Awards. As a singer she has become an icon to spark a era of other artists. She is often referred to as the 'Songbird Supreme', she is famed for her five-octave vocal range, power and melismatic style and her unique use of whistle register.
The video in which i have focused on is a female track, it represents the sexual nature of R'n'B, as well as, the expectations of female artists in the world of R'n'B. The way that the mise-en-scene is represented is mainly through lighting and costume. The lighting in the video is very much over exposed, demonstrating that it is in fact artificial lighting, creating a sole focus through spotlight on the pair in the video. The costume of the artist changes throughout, with her having multiple costume changes, although she isn't wearing much anyway. This creates the images of both characters, with him wearing glasses and being quite pale, creates the perfect geek look. Which is in fact what he is, this is clear to distinguish from the beginning sequence of the video when he pulls up to the location in a smart car, which displays the name of the company he is attached to. This wide shot also shows the location, which is a very large and extravagant mansion, all white. When she opens the door to the technician she is wearing very little clothing, mainly lingerie with a rope open. Exposing all of her body to someone she doesn't even know, suggesting that she is very sexually aware of her body, and using her body as a lure, knowing that her being dressed liked that it is his weakness. The use of role play between the characters, is used to be part of his imagination, replicating a fantasy of what people expect, a stereotype of lonely men, fantasizing about the opposite sex. The fact that she is flaunting what she has suggests that is all she has, using her body to demonstrate her talents. The use of having her body on show takes away from the weak vocal performance. The use of her in the video shows lots of revealing close ups and mid shots on her bum and breasts, even allowing her knickers from below to be seen. The fact that when she creates movements with her body they are very soft and dainty motions, showing she doesn't have the physical strengths to perform big movements, showing her as a weak, woman in distress who needs a man to support her. Again, addressing the conventions of R'n'B which shows the women to be weak. Furthermore, the fact that he is a geek shows him to also be weak, creating a equality of weakness between the pair of them. But, she is using her body to gain strength in control over him. The video as a whole creates a story of a man who desires a women who is out of his league, the fact that he has gained her however creates a image for other men to pursue women above their league, creating hope for other men. Overall, the video is very sexualised to gain control over a males through the use of her body.
10 Year Prediction-
I feel that in R'n'B the sexualisation in woman will decrease with new images who subvert the conventions coming on the scene. However, the idea of sex will remain in some aspects. A break through in equality will continue like the Same love video, and society will be equal. I feel that R'n'B is male dominate but hopefully woman will catch up on this type of music. To conclude, Some sexualisation will remain, but the true meaning of R'n'B i hope will continue to emerge.
