Logo Research

In order to grasp a better breath and understanding of what makes a successful logo, I first began to look at what existing logos are available on the market in music. Ranging from small independent labels to much broader and vast labels. Through this I will be able to gain inspiration, in order to pursue the right outcome for a logo design for our music company. Its important when making choices on what shall be used to create the logo, you should consider a variety of factors including your target audience, your artist/group and who you are portraying and what will fit in terms of genre that is being produced through the label. For example, our target audience are female who aged between 14-20 years of age. The genre that we are creating our label for is Pop music, meaning something inspired or related to Pop would create the perfect fit and context for the genre. However, the fact that they are stereotypical teenage girls, refers to fact that they are still girly and feminine, suggesting an element of elegance, class and femininity is key to create a balance in the genre and what our target audience what in a design.

Below I have looked carefully and specifically at Pop dominate record labels, in order to use as inspiration on what elements could be used and what elements are used in Pop style logos. This will also allow use to appeal to the stereotypes of target audience and what fits comfortably with the genre of our artist.

The majority of the font types (Typography) and imagery which assist the lettering is very simplistic with defined lines to create a bold statement in the design. The use of bold, straight lines represents the conglomerates in the companies, being large and powerful, meaning that the logo must match the same quality as the label themselves. Further, most of the design are bland with little colour, mainly using a monochrome effect or a Treo of colours in the design. In my research, I found that many of the labels are owned by men, or are directed by men, implying  the designs match the stereotypical role of a male, being strong and defined in masculinity . The imagery is also very little, but the imagery available is items related to music such as head phones, sound volume controls and or even items that relate to the nature of the labels name. For example, Island records has used a palm tree to suggest a island like setting to relate to the name. A similar quality throughout is the use of two different font types or one font if the logo has only one name, this would allow us to create a logo which is Pop in style, but also elegant and feminine through curved typography. The bold typography is often in a large font size, with the smaller in a medium to small font type. Overall, from this I want to create something which is pop related, in terms of Pop art, incorporating more imagery into our logo compared to the logos available. I also want a font that is bold but fits with the Pop art design and idea.

The name of our music company is MME Records, which is a combination of the beginning letter of each of our names. Adding a personal ownership to the company, but also making the unique as it based upon our names.

Fonts-

This typography at hand is very bold and black, with a white textured grain integrated through each letter, giving texture to the font. The curved edges soften the feeling of the lettering, achieving a slightly less conglomerate effect compared to something more constructed; firm/ sharp to the point. The curving displays a fun, youthful feel, the atmosphere related to the Pop genre that we are trying to create. The black/ white is very monochrome, giving a traditional feel to a modern style font. The white rippling through the black, addresses a thunder and lighting effect, like the good the bad, light and dark. The M's in this text dominate the font overall, towering above the rest of the font, making a statement, emphasizing the beginning of the name and drawing the eye instantly to the start of the text. The overall effect, is bland but the strokes of white, sparking movement and energy, perceived in the youth, a rush of Adrenalin. Nevertheless, the fact that it has little music relation, feels that this lettering is not correct for the effect we are trying to grasp.

The use of the musical instruments in a mixture of very classical instruments and a microphone, known heavily to the singing profession. Incorporating, historical and modern twists of the music world. However, they do replace the lettering, meaning it's impossible to determine what the name of the company is expressed, a big downfall to the typography. The remaining text, is very strong, with the use of straight and curved edges, a mixture of old and new. The fact that the typography is disconnected, adds a free falling feel, and disconnects from the audience. I feel that this lettering is very stamp like, formal and doesn't appear the fun factor in a head on, direct way. I feel that the image replacing the R is very messy, with little relation to music in any type of way, it feels very random and reminds me of a finger print, adding a criminal element related to R'n'B rather than pop which are young and innocent. This would be used for a classical music, but the relation to various music demonstrates that a more integrated and cross-converging music genre.

The text itself constructs a typewriter feeling, with elements of the ink being picked up and other parts leaving little ink on the page. This reminds of a classical music writing vibe, with the notes being hand written, showing the imperfection created from the various natural aspects; giving a very traditional feel compared the genre of Pop which is very modern and current to the trends of the music market. Further, the use of the line fading among and between the words, breaks the lettering up, separating them, as if they are not related when in fact they are. The lack of colour and imagination can be seen in this font, with no wow factor which would be relevant in my Pop genre. I literally need something with Pop's and really draws the eye to the logo. I feel this has a very industrial, metal and heritage feel, which is great to show the heritage of an element, like music. Furthermore, this genre is very recent and modern, therefore the heritage isn't what we want to show, but instead what Pop offers to society, and world of music. This font falls short to appeal in a way that shows Pop and new music that our company will bring.

Imagery-

When researching Pop art imagery much of the images shown was lips and tongues or headphones. The use of headphones would link to the stereotype of  headphones used in many of the well-known conglomerates companies, adding a link to Pop music, but also consumption of music. Other Pop art imagery also appeared but isn't very relevant to the Pop music genre. I want to create my logo with both lips and headphones, therefore a link through music in headphones, but the lips will add a innuendo to sex and a female quality through the use of female lips. Referring to the fact our target audience is female and our artist/group is also female. The use of sex relates more to the older spectrum of our target audience.

Final imagery choice:

From the imagery above, this image I feel would be most suitable in which I want to create. With the use of Photoshop, this imagery would allow me to create a more complex form of Pop art with the use of special effects and deepening the colour, this will add richness and intensify the meaning of the lips. The white highlights on the lips, make a much more bold, plump lip, something that teenagers of the modern are trying to achieve inspired from idols like The Kardashians. The black achieves the perfect contrast among the white and pink, helping to define the detail of the lips. Within Pop it's common to sexual related elements in subtle ways, as what the lips are suggesting to those who are of  an older age to understand what the lips are referring to. This picture is perfect for the elements and feeling we want, bring life to Pop, as well as, a modern art twist on the idea.

This image is also a final choice that will assist the lips, bringing the relation to the Pop music genre, However, the headphones cross into the R'n'B music, as do our group who are known for Pop mainly, with R'n'B elements to their tracks. The headphones show a historical feeling with more in ear headphones a popular choice, but these headphones can mainly be used by DJ's. The use of the blues in the headphones, add a more masculine touch, as well as, being a unisex colour. Therefore, relating to a universal group rather than just our target audience, expanding further and beyond, gaining more attention and popularity to our music label. The headphones are detracted from the background, my plans for this is to remove the background and enhance the quality of the headphones through, adding digital edits.

Final font choice:

This font is my final choice, it's very relevant with the idea of brush strokes, linked to art and assisting the idea of the continuous Pop art and Pop music theme running throughout, with the lips and the headphones. This font is bold, but is still feminine, related to Pop who are mainly a female target audience. However, the band that we are addressing is female and targets other females to empower themselves. Soft edges create a fun, loose vibe, related to teenagers who are free and go with the flow. To conclude, this lettering creates the perfect tone and atmospheric feeling I want in the logo.
